it would probably be easier to ask what a wedding planner doesn’t do. if you want to succeed as a wedding planner, you need to be able to handle literally every single job from start to finish. things as simple as ensuring the bride and groom’s shoes fit perfectly right through to choreographing the entertainment, transport, dining and so on for enormous wedding receptions. the thing is, every client has completely different expectations and requirements. so there’s really no such thing as two days that are ever the same. the things i’m called on to handle one day could be completely different to those i tackle the next. in any case, i do anything and everything my clients ask me to do. and believe me when i say some of the requests i receive are…well, let’s just say ‘challenging’ and leave it at that! how does your typical daily schedule look? there’s really no such thing. again, every single client has completely different expectations and priorities, so i need to be totally flexible and accommodating. sometimes i work nine till five, sometimes i have to work overnight almost every night to get the job done. just as a rough example though, i’m typically up and at it no later than 6am as this is often the only chance i get to go through my emails and basically see what needs to be prioritised. i’ll have planned most days fully beforehand so i already know where i need to be, which usually entails a ton of phone calls and meetings with service providers. florists, caterers, venues, transportation companies, churches and the couples i work with – it’s usually a pretty nonstop affair of communication and meetings. i learned the hard way during my early years that unless i bring my lunch with me, i end up going hungry. this is the kind of work where whatever you’ve got planned within the next 30 minutes can instantly change at the snap of a finger. something goes wrong with an arrangement, the client changes their requirements – you always have to be ready for anything. long days and late nights are to be expected as most of the clients i work with also work fulltime. so you can hardly expect them to get into detailed conversations and arrange meetings during the day – most of them can only meet and talk after working hours. so when the typical working day is coming to an end, mine is still as busy as it gets. that said, i always try to wrap everything up by around 7.00 pm at the latest as i don’t want to risk my own limitations/fatigue compromising the quality of the services i provide. i like to think i’m a pretty hard worker, but around 13 hours a day is just about my limit! what do you enjoy most about your job? two things – the fact that i’m my own boss and that i also specialise in making dreams come true. when i first started out, i was completely blown away by exactly how much self-discipline and organisation are needed to get by. this isn’t the kind of work where you can get away with hitting your snooze button as and when you like, or take days off here and there. but the fact that i’m my own boss and make things happen under my own steam makes the whole thing so much more satisfying and rewarding. plus, there’s really nothing like seeing the looks on the faces of my clients when everything starts coming together. i’ve learned that even when clients hire a professional wedding planner, they still have all manner of doubts, concerns and occasional panic attacks along the way. nevertheless, when things begin taking shape and they know every contingency is being planned for, you can see the excitement (and relief) on their faces. it really is a hugely satisfying experience. what do you enjoy least about your job? in truth – the fact that i constantly have to blow off arrangements with friends and family to keep things heading in the right direction. planning a wedding means organising and balancing literally hundreds of different responsibilities. it’s like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle – even if just one goes missing, the whole thing suffers. so when even the tiniest thing goes wrong along the way, i need to make sure it is put right as quickly as possible. it’s not uncommon for me to get calls at the most ridiculous hours of day or night and have no choice but to leap into action and sort things out. on the plus side, i have an incredibly supportive husband and family who understand my responsibilities. what would you advise newcomers to your profession?
